Background
Post-harvest losses have significant nutritional, health, and financial impacts for both consumers and farmers, disproportionately affecting women, who are largely responsible for managing post-harvest drying, cleaning, and storage. Inappropriate postharvest storage is one of the main causes of food loss at farm level. In some developing countries, smallholder farmers regularly lose 40 percent of their harvest due to inadequate storage.
Reducing post-harvest loss has become an important means of increasing the food supply and reducing resources use in China. Upon the systematic research and investigation on smallholder storage in China, a series of storage technologies and facilities have been developed and applied to support smallholder post-harvest loss reduction. Statistic indicate that the grain storage loss rate is decreased significantly while the storage quality is improved.
Rational
WFP is helping farmers enhance postharvest management to complement agricultural productivity and contribute to strengthening the resilience of local food systems. Post-harvest loss management is one of prioritized areas of WFP Centre of Excellence for Rural Transformation (WFP China COE). WFP China COE is dedicated to leverage China’s experience and technology to support other developing countries for post-harvest loss management at technical level via South-South Cooperation capacity building. A series of South-South Cooperation capacity building activities were held in past few years to share and exchange technologies and good practice on grain post-harvest loss reduction. The country projects in Africa delivered expertise and experience from China on post-harvest loss management. The techniques and practice of different grain storage for smallholder post-harvest loss management are important topics of South-South Cooperation knowledge sharing in this field.
Objectives
The overall objective of this training is to share China’s experience in terms of its applicable technologies and experience on smallholder grain storage. Participants will be exposed to China’s technical solutions of post-harvest loss reduction from smallholder grain storage responding to country demands via South-South Cooperation.
The specific objectives of the training are as follows:
· Share China’s techniques and practice on post-harvest loss reduction from smallholder grain storage
· Understand China’s experience on quality management and pest prevention of smallholder grain storage
Training Arrangement
The Training on Post-harvest Loss Reduction for Smallholder Grain Storage will be scheduled from 18:30 to 20:30 Beijing time (UTC/GMT+08:00) from 28th to 29th November 2023. The training agenda is attached as Annex.
The pre-survey will be circulated for demand-driven activity design. Survey analysis will help tailor the knowledge sharing. The Post-survey will also be circulated to support the capacity building improvement.
Chinese/English/French simultaneous interpretation will be provided for this training.
The training will feed the WFP-China South-South Cooperation Knowledge Sharing Platform and Cloud School.
Targeted Audience
Targeted audience will be technical officers in agriculture departments and relevant technicians in developing countries. Participants attended the training pre-survey will be invited. All WFP Regional Bureaux, Centres of Excellence, relevant Divisions in Headquarters, concerned Country Offices, will be invited for better leverage.
Organization
This training will be organised by WFP China COE with support from the Sinograin Chengdu Storage Research Institute.
